“The University of Évora was the second university to be founded in Portugal. After the creation of the University of Coimbra in 1537, the need for a second university was felt in order to serve the Southern part of the country.
The inauguration took place on November 1st of that same year, and up to this date the anniversary of the University is celebrated in that very day, together with the beginning of the school year.
Pedro da Fonseca, the most important philosopher of the 16th century, was a professor there for the longest time.”
