Amieira Marina (Alqueva)
“One of the largest European artificial lakes built on the Guadiana River, the Alqueva dam has a 250 km2 reservoir and covers five Alentejo counties. On the right bank, stand the castles of Juromenha, Alandroal, Terena, Monsaraz and Portel. On the left, Mourão and Moura are privileged belvederes over the vast water mirror.
The lake brought a surprising atmosphere to the area. Where before you would only see oak fields, olive and cork trees, we now see water and renovated life, with excellent conditions for open air activities and nautical sports.
(…) The sky was classified by UNESCO as a reserve for star watching. At night, public lights are lowered to a minimum in order to ease the perfect conditions to watch the sky.
Not to be missed is the new Aldeia da Luz, the only town under the dam waters that has literally to be relocated. ”
